A muddy one this year. The Wellington summer buggered off a few weeks ago and it's been raining off and on ever since...making for a pretty messy course. Times reflected the conditions with this year's winning time being about 2hrs 28min.....which is about 10-15 minutes off a dry track pace.
This pic is just before the finish...my bike's looking clean cause it's just been dragged through the last river crossing...

Gettin all arty with the camera in Arcadia Bay, Taupo. We're all back in Wellington and biked out after another successful mission to Napier, Rotorua and Taupo. One of the highlights was a fantastic 2 hr night ride with Erik through the forest on Jan 1, 2009. Rolled back in to the campgrounds after 11pm, had a beer and shower and hit the sack as the clock rolled over for Jan 2. Great way to start the new year.

Yesterday saw the second running of the Wild Wellington 12hr mountain bike relay. The sun came out for the race after freezing rain and HAIL the previous day in Wellington.
The course winds its way in a 6km, figure 8 loop through Mt Victoria from Haitaitai in the south to Oriental Bay in the north. Lots of climbing, lots of fun singletrack and a few tricky technical bits...including one fast downhill over loose soil and tree roots.

Our team, 'Cunning Stunts' was made up of Jarlath, Esther, Toni and Pete. Our 5th rider, Barry, wasn't able to join us due to a back injury. He did a great job supporting the team from 8:30am to 10:30pm when we finally headed home.

3 x 1x1.7m 'no dig' vege boxes. Not sure why they're called 'no dig'. I seemed to spend the best part of the weekend digging up the lawn to make room for these things.
Garden includes lettuce, capsicum, onion, spinach, peas, corn and eventually strawberries (the garden center had none in stock this weekend). All should make for good eating for the slugs, snails and caterpillars...

Somehow only managed 3 rides on this holiday...including this one in the hills above Santa Monica. Plenty of fire-road climbing and singletrack descent. The temp was mid to upper 30's and had us (Brent and I) heading for shade whenever we could find it.
Apparently this track runs for quite a few miles, paralleling the coastline in the Santa Monica hills. We only rode a small section of it...wlll have to get back there and ride some more....

Finally got my ass back on the bike today. Nothing too exciting....just a quick trip (on the road) up Mt Vic on the Merlin, then back down the singletrack. The legs have got no kick and the lung capacity is laughable. My next race (The Crazyman) is coming up on May 5.....which gives me a month to find a bit of form. Should be a challenge!

Great weekend's riding in Rotorua. A group of 8 of us went up and rented out a cabin at the Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park. It's a genuine kiwi holiday park experience....thoroughly recommend it. And it's only a 5 minute bike ride to the start of the mtb trails. Can't beat that. It was Jarlath's (pictured) first time in Rotorua. One of the trickier tracks (Hot X Buns) got the better off him. He managed to leave some skin behind about 1/2 way down one of the dropoffs. No serious injuries though. Good weekend, good riding.

Busy weekend in Wellington. Moved into the new Mt Vic pad on Saturday. I didn't have much stuff to move...mostly just clothes and the essiential bike stuff...oh and a bed. Pete (pictured) had a whole bunch more including: 4 x couches, washer, dryer, fridge freezer, tv, stereo, bed etc etc. Luckily he was only moving from one side of town to the other...so a round trip with the trailer only took 30 minutes or so. We got it all down by about 3pm, then buggered off to the pub for a couple of hours. Spent yesterday sorting the new place out. The sky tv guy has been in and hooked us up already. No internet yet though....Telecom claim they need 3 weeks to get the line sorted out. God knows why. As luck would have it there's someone else in the building with an unsecured wireless network.....pretty unusual for NZ as all our broadband services are data capped. Just about all wireles networks here are password protected....so finding an unprotected one was quite a fluke. Will mooch off of that while I can.
The sale of the korokoro house is underway...advertising will be out next week. We had a 1/2 day of good weather yesterday....so the agent went up and took some pics of the house. Will post them when he sends me a copy.

My mate Jarlath has booked our accom for Rotorua. We were lucky to get into this place. We managed to secure the last decent size cabin. The crew so far is... Jarlath and his mrs, Tanja and her fella, me myself and I. Brent is trying to get here too....but will have to fly in from China cause he's a globetrotting dot comer.

I hate to go on about the weather....but this week has been a real gem. A wintery blast came up from down south on Tuesday night and it's still with us today. Ferry crossings and flights in/out of Wellington have been cancelled, the local train system has been crapping out and even the trolley buses have stop and go. Feels like we're back in the midst of winter again.
Have a Rotorua mountain bike weekend planned for Oct 21 thru 23. Hope the rain will have stopped by then!

Lunchtime Tuesday in Wellington. The weather packed up about a week ago and shows no signs of improving. Haven't been out on the bike for bloody ages. I've got lots of excuses...none of them are particularly valid. I better start doing some miles soon though....a few friends have arranged a road trip to RotoVegas for Labour weekend which is only about 3 weeks away. Better get training!
Moved house last night. I've been house sitting dad's place for the last few months. A couple of weeks ago my sis and her family moved in and have taken over house sitting duties.....so I've moved on. Am looking after Wayne's pad this week, he's away in Turangi for a holiday with his kids. On Saturday I'm moving to a flat in the city with a couple of people from work. Will post pics when I get organized.

Played my first game of rugby on Sunday! One of the fellas at work signed the ComCom up for a 10-a-side corporate games tournament. We had 1 practice.... a couple of nights before the game...then it was straight into it. I was kinda hoping my bike fitness would get me through the game...but it didn't. Luckily we had a few subs and I was able to come off for a break.
We played 3 games (10 minute halves), we won 1 and lost 2. One of our fellas broke his collar bone in the second game and had to get taken to hospital. yikes!

The San Francisco Big Blue adventure race was held in the Bay area last Sunday. Greg convinced Brent and I to join him in a 3 man team. The event included an 8 mile kayak around Alcatraz Island, a 25 mile mountain bike ride through the Marin headlands, and an 8 mile run through the Presidio. Brent and I have never kayaked before but managed to get the 2 person kayak out and back without incident. Greg drew the short straw and had to paddle a 1 man kayak the same distance. Due to a logisitcal error (forgetting the life jackets) we started the kayak in last place. By the time we finally got started the rest of the field had about a half mile head start on us. We managed to pull in one team and transitioned to the bikes in 2nd to last place.
The biking proved to be pretty tough. All 3 of us knew the trails really well but by the end of the ride we were suffering from lack of water and food. We finished the bike leg in 15th place (up from 52nd).
The running wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It was more of a jog/walk with regular stops. Part of the race involved finding checkpoints on a map using either a compass bearing or a visual clue. We found all except one of the checkpoints and crossed the finish line about 9.5 hours after we started. Not sure how we placed overall. Good day though.

Was up in Rotorua this weekend. Drove up Friday afternoon, stayed with Erik, Pauline and the kids. Lined up for a 70km mtb race on Saturday thorugh the Whakarewerawa trail network. Mountain biking doesn't get any better than this. Fantastic single-track for mile after mile.
I didn't have a great race...my lack of fitness started to become apparent at about the 40km mark. I had to wobble my way to the end from about 20kms out.
All the big guns are in Rotorua this week for the World champs. Quite a few of the pro teams did Saturday's 70km ride...for training. The winning time was 2 hrs 59 mins. I managed to stop the clock at 4 hrs 45 min! Ouch.

Finally got around to ordering my Karapoti pic. Only took me 3 months! Here it is.....the action shot. For the first time (since I've been doing Karapoti anyways) there was a photograher at the top of the Devil's Staircase. This pic is a bit deceptive....it looks like I'm jogging up the staircase....the truth is that I grovelled my way up most of it only put in a sprint for the camera. I collapsed in a heap as soon as the shutter clicked.

Haven't done a race since. But that's about to change. There's racing next weekend in Makara, and the following weekend in Rotorua. Stay tuned!

Just a quick update. ....

Rode with Jarlath and Tanja from work last night. Climbed Mt Vic a couple of times. Great views of the city from the top. Short ride though....<1>

Rode in today too. Light rain in Wellington today. Rush hour traffice was crawling along...but the bike lines were clear!

I'm looking to replace my messenger bag. The one I have now is appox 10 years old. I picked it up from A to Z couriers, NYC when I installed their "Kiwi Express" system for them back in the '90s. The messenger bag rocks. I 've been doing a bit of research on it. It's made by Globe canvas in NYC...here's what I was able to find...

"The messenger bag as we know it today, however, originated in the 1950s or thereabouts, being produced as a bag for telephone linemen, by Globe Canvas/De Martini in New York. The linemen needed a bag they could easily access while climbing telephone poles, and this design worked perfectly. New York bicycle messenger companies picked them up sometime in the 1970s, and initially were purchased one color per company, as identifiers of a sort. For a long while, NYC was the bastion of the messenger bag - until things started to spread in the 1980s".

I've checked in with Smilie....he keeps in touch with Mark at A to Z. Apparently they no longer use/provide messenger with the Globe Canvas bags....so I'm not going to be able to replace with one I have (at least not with one that has the A to Z logo on it).

Also....Mr De Martini (the original maker of the bag) is no longer alive...but before he died he sold his company on to Rod Hanson...who continues to make the bags. He has a website and an 800 number. I'll give him a call when I'm in SF and get a new bag ordered!

haven't been posting much lately. My broadband connection at home is in transition. I've cancelled my Slingshot service and signed up for Telstraclear (cable). It's not going to be online for a couple of weeks.....but will work out cheaper in the long run.

Have managed to get out a bit on the bike. Am doing a regular Sunday morning mtb ride with some Hutt Valley lads. Several of them are motocross demons and are lethal going downhill on the moutain bikes. I've got no hope of keeping up. Enjoying the ride though...it's 3+ hours in the hills up behind the house in Korokoro. Fireroad/road climbs...and sweet singletrack downhills. Good times.

Am also riding Tuesday nights with an Aussie chick from work. We're trying to get a 1-2 hour ride in at Makara Peak....which is awesome at night. A bit cold this time of the year....but still tons of fun.

Other than that I'm just doing my regular commute rides. Legs are starting to feel a bit stronger. Am hoping to peak when I get to California!

Oh....there's a 70km mtb race coming up in Rotorua (as part of the world champs) next month. A few of us from work have signed up for that.....should be interesting!

Got the Merlin back from Dec. He's replaced the rear shock and had a good laugh at the state of the old unit. Those spirals and rings in the pic are what remains of the old spring. It was competely stuffed. The only thing that was kddping in together was the shock housing.

Dec has installed the new spring/stancions etc.....will ride to work tomorrow and report back in.

The folks from Merlin came through. A complete rebuild kit for rear shock on the Merlin arrived in the mail yesterday. It may seem like it's taken ages to get here...but I only confirmed the order last week. I'm surprised it arrived so quickly.
I've dropped the bike and the rebuild kit off to Declan....he's going to pull everything apart and have a go at rebuilding it.
I'm bikeless at the moment....which means I'm drving to work. Hopefully not for much longer!

March 7, 2006 is census night in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, held every five years, is the official count of the total number of people and dwellings in New Zealand. On census night, everyone in the country must fill in a census form.

Question 11 has been a hot topic for kiwis in this year's census. The question asks the individual to identify with an appropriate ethnic group. Curiously, there's no option for 'New Zelander'. Apparently there are no New Zealanders living in New Zealand. Rumor has it they've all buggered off to Australia.

An email has been circulating through offices around the country in the weeks prior to the census encouraging census takers to check the 'other' option and type 'New Zealander' in the text field rather than check one of the pre-configured options.
Will look forward to the results and see how many New Zealanders we really have down here

We've got a wintery southerly in Wellington today. The Picton ferries have been cancelled due to big seas...and gale force winds are causing chaos around the region.
Dropped in at mum's place at lunchtime just in time to catch a head to head bake-off between Gran and Amy. Gran rattled off a great batch of scones, and Amy came back with a fine tray of coconut and banana muffins. Luckily I was there to judge and, after several scones, muffins and cups of teas....declared a draw
